How long should one stay at a company?

Getting a job is one thing. How long one stays at one, however, depends on a number of factors. Some of these, according to Alex Tugumisirize, a human resource practitioner with World Food Programme, include:

The people they work with
Does one share their organisation’s sensibilities? Do they like the people they work with and find them relatable?

Work Content
Does one feel a higher purpose in their work? Does the work excite you. Do you find it meaningful as to make your life feel significant.

Opportunity
Are you exposed to things and people that build you? Are you learning and growing both professionally and personally, to a point of personal satisfaction.

Options
The brand is strong enough to give you credibility you can take with you, and is in a business or industry that has a future. Ownership. Does one know why they are working there, and are at peace with it,” he says.
This means that the question of how long one should stay at a particular workplace varies from one person to another since people harbor different career goals and interests in life. It is these desires that are likely to determine whether or not a person will stay at a workplace for long or a short period of time.
Tugumisirize also holds quite a similar view saying that: “There are no hard and fast answers to how long one should stay in an organisation; this is a fluid and personal issue. I would advise an intrinsic approach, guided by one’s purpose, both for their career and life. For a career person, work is integral to the pursuit of happiness.”
What one is hoping to become of their potential, and whether their current work place enables them to become that or not is quite an important question to find answers for before deciding whether or not to stay at a particular workplace for long. In this case, Tugumisirize advises that one tries to invest in a little self-awareness and reflection.

The workplace
This is one of the biggest factors that may influence the time a person is likely to stay at a workplace.
Micheal Bwisho, a human resource practitioner with Umeme Uganda, notes that: “Some organisations are quite advanced and are at the forefront of innovation and world class practices. They invest heavily in building and engaging talent, and nurturing a vibrant internal labor market - where by it becomes very realistic to grow into anything, and truly pursue happiness in life, holistically.”
He also adds that as long as a person has the talents and capacity to thrive in that kind of environment connecting with it fully, then staying for long or short may not be a big issue as such.
“Such environments give a person opportunity to grow and be able to fit anywhere else in whichever industry they are working in,” Bwisho adds.
For people who never have such a fortune in life [of working in place that invests heavily in building and engaging talent, and nurturing a vibrant internal labour market], Bwisho says staying too long may narrow their exposure and cultural adaptability, making it a challenge to compete for opportunities and thrive in different environments.
On the other hand, he adds, “an organisational sojourner may suffer disruptions in learning-curve and track-record, so that professionally, they never consolidate or become whole. Additionally, in some environments, it may be reason for concern about their loyalty and stability.”
