After spending 11 days on remand in Luzira prison, court has granted bail to the former Kamwokya LC1 chairman Fred Ssentamu Nyanzi.

Nyanzi, also a brother to Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi was arrested in connection to protests against the imposition of the social media and mobile taxes.

He is charged with disobedience of statutory duty contrary to section 116 of the Penal Code Act and charge.
In a session presided over by Buganda Road Chief Magistrate, Ms Esther Nahirya Mr Nyanzi was granted cash bail of Shs 1m and his sureties bonded at Shs 10m non-cash each.

He is charged alongside three others who are; David Lule, Edward Ssebuufu and Julius Katongole who court, as well, granted temporary freedom under similar terms.

They denied the charges as read to them before court.
MP Kyagulanyi was also expected to appear before court and plead to the charges as the fifth suspect.

However, Mr Kyagulanyi declined but assigned his lawyer, Mr George Musisi, to notify court that he was unable show up, as he was finishing some official assignments but would report before the close of the week.

His lawyer further informed court that their client had sought court to extend his bond. But, Police dropped the request on ground that the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) had already sanctioned similar charges against him (Kyagulanyi) so he had to report before court.

The prosecution contends that the group was marching from downtown Kampala, before being intercepted by Police and Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) enforcement officers near City Square.
Court adjourned the matter to August 24, for mention of the charges.
