Jailed MP aspirant rushed to Mulago hospital amid torture claims

LIRA. The former Ajuri County MP contestant, Mr Isaac Apenyo has been rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital amid claims of torture during the time of his arrest.

The Uganda Prison Service Public relations officer, Mr Frank Baine told Daily Monitor on Tuesday that Mr Apenyo was referred to Mulago hospital by Lira Regional Referral Hospital where he had been getting treatment.
“It is true he claims to have been beaten by the time he was being arrested. The [court] sitting in Lira ordered that he should be taken to hospital for examination and Lira Regional Referral Hospital referred him to Mulago,” he said.

Mr Baine further noted that the officer in charge of Lira Government Prison has written to Lira High Court in Lira District to decide on Apenyo’s fate since he is a civil prisoner.

However, Apenyo’s close associates claim he was tortured during his arrest at Amazon Pub on Sunday night.
Mr Jimmy Awany, the LC3 chairman for Adyel Division in Lira Municipality said Apenyo was manhandled by his arresters.
“He was beaten by those who arrested him that night and right now he urinates blood,” Mr Awany said.

On Monday, Lira High Court sent Mr Apenyo to Lira government Prison for six months on accusations of failing to pay Shs84, 686, 500 to Ajuri County MP Mr Hamson Obua.
The money is said to be costs incurred by Mr Obua in an election petition filed by Mr Apenyo challenging the Election results in which Mr Obua was declared MP. Mr Apenyo lost the case and court ordered him to pay the costs.
