Kyotera set for Independence celebrations

Kyotera-Preparations for Uganda’s 56th Independence anniversary celebrations are in high gear in Kyotera District, Daily Monitor has established.
According to Ms Pamela Watuwa, the outgoing Kyotera Resident District Commissioner, all is set to host the event at Kasasa Playground in Kyotera Town Council tomorrow.
“We are expecting at least 5,000 dignitaries and more than 30,000 other guests from within the district and other parts of the country,” Ms Watuwa said during an interview yesterday.
She said the celebrations will kick off at 7am and that all guests will be provided with drinks and meals.
“We invite all people to come because this is our day as Ugandans to rejoice and rekindle our commitment to work and develop our country,” she said
President Museveni is expected to grace the event as the chief guest.
When Daily Monitor visited Kasasa Playground yesterday, the venue was a beehive of activity with UPDF soldiers carrying out their rehearsals ahead of the D-day.
District officials were also supervising the erection of VIP tents while trees and electric poles on all roads leading to the venue were draped with the national flag.
The day will be marked under the theme: “Standing Tall to Celebrate 56 years of Independence.”
Security measures
Last Monday, police in a statement warned Ugandans against terror attacks targeting dignitaries such as ministers, Members of Parliament, senior executives and security personnel during the celebrations.
Mr Musa Kayongo, the district police commander, said they have put in place all measures to guarantee security of all people in the district.
He said all routes to Kasasa Playground will be manned by both uniformed and plain clothed security personnel and urged people to cooperate with them.
“We have deployed our men at every point within the town, at Mutukula border and on Lake Victoria specifically in Kasensero and Nangoma to ensure safety of our people. Since the army is working closely with us, we indeed expect maximum security,” he said.
He, however, warned Opposition politicians against organising parallel celebrations, saying such activities will not be allowed in the area.
Mr Patrick Kisekkulo, the district chairperson, commended government for choosing the district to host this year’s celebrations.
A total of 100 people are expected to receive medals. This will be the third time the President is visiting Kyotera since it was carved out of Rakai District last year.
