Medical student wins Gulu University Guild race

Mr Daniel Mbazira

GULU-The Gulu University electoral Commission has declared Mr Daniel Mbazira, a fourth year medical student as the new Guild president of the university.

Mr Mbazira, 28, garnered 1,239 votes beating his rival, Mr James Ojok Onono, a second year Public Administration student, who got 490 votes.

Other candidates in the race were Ms Joyce Halima Reeni, who got 37 votes, Mr Bithum Eric Opondo who got 20 votes, Mr Johnson Noowe, who got 201 votes and Mr Wilfred Nyeko who walked away with three votes.

Announcing the results on Monday, Mr Evaristo Onen Ocheng, the electoral commission boss said the elections were free and fair despite a low turnout of voters.

He said 1,990 students voted.

Mr Ocheng, however, said out of the 12 polling stations at the university, votes from two polling stations were nullified after rowdy students destroyed two ballot papers.

He said one of the students whose identity wasn’t disclosed was arrested and detained by police at the university, pending further investigations.

Working to revamp University
Speaking to Daily Monitor, Mr Mbazira said he will ensure the university is revamped.
“Gulu University deserves to look better. Other Universities that were established a few years ago are looking better and we have always questioned what happened to Gulu University. Through my leadership, I will advocate for infrastructural improvement,” he said.

“My promise is to stand by the students for truth and justice. We have seen leaders elected in the past who deviate from students’ interests,” Mr Mbazira said.

Mr Mbazira will replaces Mr Joseph Okidi, who defeated him in last year’s race.
