KAMPALA. Police in Kampala have arrested Pastor Samuel Kakande’s deputy over illegal possession of guns.
Pastor Johnson Muwanguzi, a deputy to Pastor Kakande of Synagogue Church at Wandegeya-Kubbiri, was arrested for being in illegal possession of two assault rifles and nearly 100 bullets.
Police spokesperson Andrew Kaweesi confirmed Pastor Muwanguzi’s arrest.

“True, we have Pastor Muwanguzi in our cells. He was arrested for illegally having two guns which are usually used for hunting activities. We are planning to address the media about the matter,” Mr Kaweesi said.
Mr Muwanguzi has since insisted the guns belong to his boss (Pastor Kakande) who has also denied having any knowledge of the deadly weapons.
The police publicist said procurement and registration documents show the guns belong to Pastor Muwanguzi.
“He has failed to explain how guns belonging to Pastor Kakande were purchased and registered in his name. All the documents show the guns belong to him. We are detaining him as we conduct our investigations,” Mr Kaweesi said.

A source at Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Mr Muwanguzi’s arrest came after a man of Asian descent identified as Patel Kurash was found with a star pistol and nine bullets.
“Kurash would use the gun to threaten people. The concerned public alerted the police and was arrested,” said a source within SIU.
Mr Kurash is said to have mentioned Pastor Muwanguzi during interrogation, prompting the police team to go Mr Muwanguzi’s home in Bukoto, a Kampala suburb, where they recovered the two guns and 87 bullets.

Pastor Kakande and his aides declined to comment on the matter.
However, Mr Kaweesi said the police had talked to Pr Kakande who denied knowledge of the guns.
“We talked to Pastor Kakande and he told us he doesn’t know anything about the guns. We have recovered the guns as exhibits. We shall find out the truth,” Mr Kaweesi said.
Although Mr Kaweesi could not divulge when Mr Muwanguzi was arrested but a source at SIU intimated that he was arrested on Tuesday last week and has since been in the cells.
