BUKEDEA. Two people were at the weekend shot dead by a police officer working with Tajar Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) in Tajar Village, Kamutur Sub-county in Bukedea District.

East Kyoga region police spokesperson Michael Odongo said the incident happened as Mr James Loduk attempted to arrest the two deceased persons after they were reportedly accused of assaulting a woman.

“The officer had gone to conduct an arrest but the lead suspect, Geoffrey Wepukhulu, attacked him and attempted to grab the gun; that is when he got shot,” Mr Odongo said in an interview.

Residents react
He added: “This incident attracted more villagers to pursue the armed officer and about 300 metres away from the first scene, Loduk opened fire again at the angry mob, killing another person instantly.”

Mr Odongo said they have opened a murder case against the officer, adding that the bodies of the deceased persons were taken to Bukedea Health Centre IV for post-mortem.

He said after the futile chase against the killer officer, the mob withdrew and burnt property belonging to the complainant’s family such as a motorcycle, food and five houses.
