Police recover three bodies of boat passengers

  • Mr Sam Awomi Longa, the LC3 Chairperson for Gimara Sub-county in Moyo District cautioned the community members against crossing the river at night.

MOYO- The Police in Moyo and Adjumani districts have recovered three bodies of people who were involved in an accident when the boat they were traveling in capsized on Sunday.

The Moyo District Police Commander, Mr Stephen Agaba, confirmed the incident on Wednesday saying: “We have now managed to recover three bodies after the accident on River Nile. The body of Ochieno Isaac from Namayigo district was the last to be recovered. He was a ferry operator at Obongi.”

He identified the deceased as; Charles Ambayo, 22, a resident of Ciforo Sub County, Adjumani District, Isaac Ochieno, a Ferry operator and Michael Drici, 24, a resident of Indilinga village.
According to Police, the cause the accident remains unknown, but eyewitnesses have blamed it on overloading.

“We are still investigating the matter and we are going to obtain information from the survivor (Rashid Umbele). We have not recorded his statement because he still unconscious,” Mr Agaba said.

Mr Sam Awomi Longa, the LC3 Chairperson for Gimara Sub-county in Moyo District cautioned the community members against crossing the river at night.

“It’s always unsafe to travel at nightm, because it is hard to get assistance in the night. Our people should really stop crossing the river at night with small canoes”, Mr Awom said.
