Police in Kalungu District are hunting for a woman whose eight-months-old baby died under the care of her six-year-old daughter whom she left home to go and celebrate Valentine’s Day with friends.

Police say Christine Kalungi, a resident of Agipu cell in Lukaya Town Council allegedly left the baby under the care of a toddler knowing she was sick.
Kalungi’s neighbour, Ms Annet Nabulya, said: “She left home at around midday and by evening, she had not returned. We were alerted by one of her friends who had gone to check on the children only to find the baby not breathing.”

“Some of us could not tell that the baby was dead and so we advised her (Kalungi’s friend) to rush her to the clinic where the nurse confirmed she was already dead,” Ms Nabulya added.
When the mother was called on phone, she reportedly told the neighbours that it was the baby’s fate and therefore, her presence home would not have changed anything.

“She said if the child was dead, then that was her fate. That she could still have died with or without her presence. She switched off the phone and has not been seen since,” added Ms Nabulya.
The body was taken to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem as police launched investigations into the matter.
