Three students have sustained injuries as they were escaping after fire gutted Mary Stuart Hall, a female students’ residence at Makerere University.

A statement from the police spokesperson SSP Emilian Kayima indicates that police’s fire brigade and rescue services was informed on time and 7 firefighting trucks were dispatched to contain the fire.

“The massive fire which started in the canteen on ground floor was beginning to spread to other floors but was successfully contained; the hall of residence is now safe and the operation has been called off and trucks have retreated,” said Kayima.

Kayima said the three female students who were trying to escape sustained minor injuries.

“The hall is safe now, save for the ground floor that is littered with debris and will need cleaning and some repairs. The investigation teams and scenes of crimes officers are on ground to do that bit of the investigation,” Kayima said further in the statement.

“We commend the students and citizens who called the police quickly enabling us to quickly respond. We wish the injured the students quick recovery and parents need to calm down as there is no cause for alarm,” Kayima said.
