National Water and Sewerage Corporation has announced a plan to ration water supply to different parts of the city because of the dry spell.

Speaking at a press briefing last Friday, Dr Silver Mugisha, the NWSC managing director, said during the months of January to March, the Corporation usually experiences severe dry spell that affects their capacity to deliver water to customers.

“When we experience these dry spells, it affects our water supply. It’s not that the quantity of water reduces but the consumption patterns change. People rely on our water and the demand goes up,” he said, adding that during this period, the public will receive the water but not as reliably as when its not a dry season.

He explained that unlike in the past where there were no contingency measures to contain the surge in demand for water, during this season, the corporation has put in place measures to address the increased demand in Kampala.

He said they are finalising the Ggaba project, which will add 50 million litres a day to the water supply. He also said they will be collecting water from a booster called Gunhill at Centenary Park, Kampala, which will add 6 million litres a day to the system increasing production from the current 190 million litres to 250 million litres a day.

He said when commissioned in February, places like Namasuba, Kaboowa, Mutundwe, Kyengera, Ndejje, Lubowa, Kasangati, and Gayaza that have not previously been covered by the network, will be getting full-time supply and booster stations have been built along the networks to ensure constant supply.

Future plans
He said outside Kampala, the corporation is laying another 1,200 Kilometres of pipeline across the country to extend services to new towns.

Also, in order to achieve its strategic direction for the new towns that the corporation has taken over, they are working towards stabilising water supply in those areas.
