Career expo: Students tipped on how to write successful CVs

At least 250 students of Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) Nkozi were yesterday tipped on how to write a successful professional Curriculum Vitae (CV) that would earn them their dream jobs.

Speaking to students of Nkozi University at the Career Guidance Expo held at Cardinal Wamala Auditorium, at the university’s main campus in Nkozi, Mpigi District, Mr. Moses Ssesanga, the Head of Human Resource at MPL said that potential employers receive more than 2,000 applicants each time a job advert is placed in the media and only those that meet the employer’s expectations are considered.

Often times, possible candidates miss out on the job opportunities as a result of lack of skills in CV writing, according to Mr Ssesanga.

“A CV is a gateway for one to qualify for an interview and you should prepare it now so that when you are presented with a job opportunity, it is ready. Prepare it right,” he said.

“When writing a CV, avoid short hand messages and the irrational language you use on WhatsApp chats with friends. Check spellings and use proper grammar before you submit your CV,’’

Upon attainment of the job, Mr Ssesanga cautioned on working smart.

“Execute assignments in time, be quick to comprehend issues and respect everyone at the work place from the cleaner to top managers. You will succeed and be able to turn your life around.”

Knowledge as capital
The two-day event was opened by Prof John Chrysostom Maviiri, the university Vice Chancellor, who commended Daily Monitor for relaying undistorted information to the public.

He added: “Some people think that when you have money, you are considered great. I can assure you that knowledge is your major capital, not money. Take career guidance as a priority in your life to grab all the opportunities in this world. Put God at the fore always to guide you.’’

The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and Monitor Publications Ltd (MPL) merged their annual University Career Fairs to produce more impressive fairs covering 11 universities across the country.

During the fairs, so far held in Makerere, Gulu, Mbarara and Ndejje universities, renowned personalities with diverse expertise have mentored students on transition from the school life which ends at university and how to tap into the job market either as employees or entrepreneurs.
