Bishops accuse leaders of betraying citizens

Ntungamo/Tororo- The Bishop of South Ankole Diocese Rt Rev Nathan Ahimbisibwe Tuesday said the endemic corruption in public and private institutions indicates that Ugandan political and institutional leaders are not loyal to God and the people of Uganda.

While preaching during Christmas a service at St. Mathew Cathedral Kyamate in Ntungamo town, Bishop Ahimbisibwe said if leaders in Uganda do not stop stealing and mismanaging public resources and repent, Uganda will not attain true development.

“We have betrayed the country as leaders. We have betrayed citizens. Someone is given money to manage the estate of deceased parents on behalf of orphans, he/she steals it. Some people are given money to help refugees, they use it for their own gain,” he said. “Even if we have good leaders at the top, we can never have development because of this betrayal. There is even betrayal in our families, in church and everywhere.”

In Tororo, the Bishop of Bukedi Diocese Rev. Samuel George Bogere Egesa appealed to government implement laws that are intended to fight child marriage and domestic violence.

While delivering a Christmas summon at St. Peter's Cathedral Church Tororo, Bishop Egesa said the rate at which families are disintegrating is alarming.

He said child marriage, which is a dangerous form of child abuse indicates that Uganda’s laws are weak.

He asked leaders at all levels to play their part and stop the vices which he said are threatening the family institution.
