Greed cause of disunity among Acholi MPs - chief

The Acholi Paramount Chief, Mr David Onen Acana II

GULU- The Acholi Paramount Chief, Mr David Onen Acana II, has blamed the current disunity among members of the Acholi Parliamentary Group [APG] on greed and selfishness.

According to Mr Rwot Acana, the disunity among the APG members has affected collective reasoning among the leaders aimed at solving problems affecting people in the region.

“The leadership in Acholi does not care about its people. The Members of Parliament especially under the APG are not united. They are only thinking about themselves and working closely with those they like,” Mr Acana observed.

He made the remarks while delivering his New Year’s message to his subjects at his palace in Bardege Division, Gulu Municipality, on Saturday.

Mr Acana said while the leaders in Acholi are divided, their counterparts in Lango Sub-region are united citing the recent meeting to resolve matters surrounding the alleged murder of an 11-year-old boy in Lira by two Indians last month.

He said his efforts to unite the APG leaders have always been futile since some of the members do not want to share a meeting room.

According to Mr Acana, the cultural institution is now proposing meetings with the various leaders starting January next year.

In his message, Mr Acana also called upon the leaders within Acholi to put stringent guidelines for accepting foreigners into their land before conducting business.

The Leader of Opposition, also Woman MP for Gulu District, Ms Betty Aol Ocan, advised APG members to start a ‘clean page’ come 2019.
She lauded the Acholi chief on the move to unite the MPs under their umbrella APG.

The APG Secretary General, also the Kilak South MP Gilbert Olanya, welcomed the meetings but said despite the bickering among the members, APG has been able to score success citing, among others, their intervention in saving Gulu University and Nodding syndrome children who had been abandoned by government.
