Iganga residents to pay for street lighting bills
Iganga town.
Starting the new financial year, Iganga Municipal residents will have to pay the bills for the Street lights placed next to their premises. It follows a resolution by the municipality in January this year.
James Luyimbazi, the Town Clerk Iganga Municipality, says they intend to install street lights in the municipality at the tune of Shillings 500 million. He says the meters for the street lights will be installed on adjacent buildings so their owners can foot the power bill.
He however, notes that this will only be applicable where the owners of the building applies to the municipality and commit to meet the power bills. Luyimbazi says the decision was prompted by the failure of the municipality to clear a bill of over Shillings 5 million for the previous financial years due to poor revenue collection.
Luyimbazi says they are engaging residents to meet the power bills, adding that some are already paying for the street lights.
Yakub Muwaya, a resident of Iganga Municipality, has welcomed the proposal given the burden of crime in the municipality. He says the partnership will help to fight crime in the area.
But Abdul Kasiko, another trader in Iganga Central Market says much as they need street lights, government should foot the bills since they are already burdened with taxes.
Michael Lugada, a driver says that he pays a lot of taxes that he cannot accept to pay the street lighting bills. He says the municipality shouldn't burden the tax payers because the revenue collected is enough to pay the bills.
