Makerere guild elections on today

The elections for Makerere University Guild President kick off today at the University’s main campus in Kampala.

The race has attracted 11 candidates who are competing for the post from different political parties including the National Resistance movement (NRM), Democratic Party (DP), Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), those identifying with the People Power movement and independent candidates.

The spokesperson of the university electoral commission Kato Martin says that voting starts at 8am and ends at 5pm.

He says that tallying of the votes will commence at the guild offices before announcing the winner.

The candidates in the race include FDC’S Milly Namuddu, A second-year Bachelor of Education (Arts) student, George Mutumba, a second-year student of Development Studies, Osbert Alinda, a second year Bachelor of Social Sciences student, Andrew Julian Taliwaku, Joshua William Mukisa both third-year Bachelors of Law students, and Umaru Wageya, a second-year student of Bachelor of Economics.

Others are Emmanuel Agaba, a third-year student of Bachelor of Science in Conservation Forestry and Products Technology, Winter Nsimire Muhangi, a third-year Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, and David Musiri a second-year student of Bachelor of Commerce External, Donald Munanu and Julius Kateregga.
The Guild President represents the student’s grievances and participates in policy making made by the university council and management.
