Namukozi Hill, the seat of Mityana Diocese, was abuzz with excitement after news filtered in that Bishop Samuel Stephen Kaziimba had been elected new archbishop of the Church of Uganda .
Ecstatic staff jumped up and down hugging each other fervently. Others made frantic telephone calls to inform their colleagues deep in villages about the good news.
“I am happy for him, it is the country to benefit from his service not Mityana alone,” the Rev Moses Ssemugoma, the chairperson of the house of clergy in the diocese, said.
The Rev Ssemugoma said the prelate’s election was in appreciation of his excellent performance.
Mr Daudi Malagala, the former head of laity in Mityana Diocese, said Bishop Kaziimba was chosen by God and the House of Bishops simply fulfilled His command.
“We thank God who has enabled him to serve better and we pray for him to continue serving his people in a higher office,” he said.
In Mityana Town, traders boda- boda riders and motorists tooted horns to express their happiness.
Dealers in musical equipment and some disco owners tuned up volume which lasted for an hour.
Bishop Kaziimba assumed office on October 26, 2008, as 4th Bishop of Mityana Diocese, replacing Bishop Dr Dunstan Kopriano Bukenya.
Ms Beatrice Nabukalu, a vendor at Mityana Central Market, said the archbishop –elect is fit for the office.
“He is result-oriented, focused and has turned around Mityana Diocese during his tenure. In fact his ascendance to the coveted office of archbishop is not a surprise to me,” she said.
But Mzee Samson Kalule, a resident of Namukozi, expressed disappointment, saying Christians in Mityana still needed Bishop Kaziimba.
“We will be lucky to get a hardworking bishop like Kaziimba...,” he said.

Achievements

Bishop Kaziimba has superintended many development projects in the diocese with the most outstanding being the construction of the 3,000- seater St Andrews Cathedral. The Shs6.5 billion cathedral, which was commissioned by President Museveni last October, replaced an old small cathedral which had a sitting capacity of less than 1,000 worshipers.
