  • Mr Tukei said the preliminary investigations indicate that the fire broke out after a burning candle lit a mosquito net in bedroom before spreading to the entire house.

Police in Bududa District are investigating circumstances under which a woman and her two-year-old daughter were burnt to death in a house fire over the weekend.

The incident occurred at Soweto village, Buloli South ward in Bududa town council. The residents identified the woman as Sylvia Kibone, 32, a wife to a Boda Boda rider only identified as Watasa.

The acting Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, Mr Robert Tukei confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to find out the root cause of the fire.

“It’s true, we are now investigating the outbreak of the fire,” he said, adding that some witnesses have already recorded statements with police.

Mr Tukei said the preliminary investigations indicate that the fire broke out after a burning candle lit a mosquito net in bedroom before spreading to the entire house.

“It’s believed that the mother moved out of the house and left a lit candle in the bedroom with her child, who was sleeping but unfortunately, when she returned, she found fire burning and in the process of trying to save her child, she was also burnt to death,” he said.

He warned parents to always be cautious while using candles at night to avoid similar incidents.
