Poor coordination stalling health targets

A senior ministry of Health official has warned that resources in the sector will go to waste until there is better cordination of activities across ministries.

Mr Tom Aliti, the Commissioner, Health Sector Partners and Multi-Sectoral Coordination Department at the Ministry of Health, said although uganda is party to the SDGs , one of which targets to enhance healthy lives and promote well- being for all at all ages that will not happen until all agenices and ministries work together.

"Challenge is how we always put together resources in an efficient manner to ensure that we have better coordination. We are planning to ensure that in the next development plan III and the next health sector development plan, we plan to put a lot of emphasis on inter-sectoral and multi-sectoral coordination for better," Dr Aliti said.

Dr Aliti made the remarks on during a multi sectoral coordination and sustainable development goals by the African Centre for Global Health and Social Transformation (ACHEST ) an initiative promoted by African and international leaders in health and development.

Prof Francis Omaswa, the founder and executive director of ACHEST, stated that the structures to implement multi-sectoral coordination but there is still lack of commitment by the leaders at different levels.

"Look at the Parish chiefs, when I was growing up during colonial days and after colonial days, the parish chief was the integrated leader of all sectors. He made sure pit latrines were there, he made sure the rural road network was there, children went to school...” Prof Omaswa stated.

Uganda was one of the first countries to develop its 2015/16–2019/20 national development plan in line with the SDGs also known as universal call for action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
