Three die after charcoal truck overturns near Karuma Bridge

  • In May, 2018, 23 people died in an accident when a bus registration number UAK 562L belonging to Gaagaa bus company which was moving from Lira District rammed into a tractor registration number UAU 872M which was moving towards Karuma in Kiryandongo District.

Three people have been confirmed dead in a grisly car accident that occurred along the Kampala-Gulu highway on New Year’s Day.

The Fuso truck registration number UAN 533U which was travelling from Gulu side reportedly overturned as it was approaching Karuma Bridge.
The Nwoya District Police commander, Mr Rashid Doka said the driver lost control of the vehicle which was overloaded with charcoal and some passengers before it overturned.

The deceased
The driver, one Ronald Ejalu died instantly. Other passengers, Hussein Kafeero and Ronald Ijalo also died of injuries a few moments after the accident.
Their bodies were taken to Kiryandongo hospital mortuary for postmortem.

Injured
Mr Doka said the owner of the vehicle and the charcoal, Mr Patrick Segawa was rushed along with two other unidentified passengers to Atapala hospital in Oyama District for medication.
The scene of the accident was littered with charcoal, blood and broken glasses from the shattered wind screens.
The accident which occurred at about 11am temporarily paralyzed traffic along the usually busy Gulu-Kampala Highway.

However, the vehicle which had blocked part of the road was towed by Police to Karuma police post.

MP Otto
On Saturday, the Aruu county MP Odonga Otto sustained injuries in an accident along the Kampala-Gulu Highway when his car reportedly rammed into a trailer that had earlier overturned in the middle of the road at Katuugo trading centre in Nakasongola District.
In June 2018, a Fuso lorry Registration number UAS 994Y loaded with logs which was travelling from Lira District lost control and plunged into the River Nile at Karuma Bridge via the railings.
