Kampala. The Uganda Business and Technical Examination Board (Ubteb) yesterday said there was a slight improvement in performance by students who sat the 2018 Business and Technical examinations in diploma and certificate courses across the country.

The executive secretary of Ubteb, Mr Onesmus Oyesigye, said out of the 21,428 students who registered for the exams, 19,940 (93 per cent) sat for the exams and 14,353 (72 per cent ) passed while 5,583 (28 per cent) failed
Mr Oyesigye was speaking yesterday during the combined release of Ubteb exams and the Directorate of industrial training (DIT), Uganda Vocational Qualification (UVQ) occupational and module assessment exams at the Office of the President, which was presided over by the Minister of Education, Ms Janet Museveni.

Results cancelled
He said male students performed better than their female counterparts with 73.6 per cent and 65.7 per cent passes, respectively. The results of 69 students were cancelled.
“The board has continued to set various measures to minimise examination leakages and malpractice. We, however, recorded 86 cases of malpractice by candidates from 18 centres.

“The examination security committee of the board heard their pleas and has recommended 69 candidates to the Education ministry for cancellation,” Mr Oyesigye said.
He said the board has registered an increase in the number of candidates by 26 per cent, an indication that Ugandans have started appreciating technical and vocational education.
