Gulu University has been sued for allegedly blocking a student who had identified himself with People Power, a political pressure group associated with Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, from participating in the recently concluded guild elections.
However, Gulu High Court Deputy Registrar, Ms Rosemary Bareebe, on Wednesday asked Gulu University legal team and the student to consider mediation as the best means to settle their grievance awaiting court verdict Thursday.

Last month, Mr Imuran Ntambazi Java and a group of other students associated with People Power took Gulu University Academic registrar and Dean of Students to court.
They accused them of using the university electoral commission to block Mr Ntambazi from being nominated for the guild race without justifiable reasons on March 23.

‘People Power candidate’ blocked from guild president race

Mr Tonny Olanya Olenge, the chief strategist for Mr Java, said they are planning to sue the university electoral commission for unfairly blocking their candidate

The university’s electoral commission returning officer, Mr Edmond Okello blocked Mr Natmbazi saying he had been advised by the university’s dean of students not to nominate him.
Mr Ntambazi was blocked on allegations that he was not a fully registered student of Gulu University when he showed up for the nomination.
Mr Ntambazi, 21, is a second year student of Bachelor of Science in Computer.
Speaking during the court session on Wednesday Ms Bareebe said “I asked you both parties to consider mediation as the best option and file the mediation report tomorrow before afternoon that I have set to make the ruling.”

She added that “The implication of the ruling may not favour one of you; I still repeat sit and agree on how best this matter can be resolved.”
Mr Ntambazi’s lawyer Lastone B Gulume told court that his client was unfairly treated by the university having been denied nomination adding that it will ruin his entire political ambition and career.
“He is unable to fairly and humbly contest for the position where he was not nominated for and his political ambition and leadership career is under jeopardy,” Mr Gulume said.
