Woman given 20 years in jail for killing husband on Valentine’s Day
A 27-year-old woman is to spend 20 years of her life in jail after the High Court in Mukono District in central Uganda found her guilty of murdering her husband.
State prosecutor Agnes Kiconco told court presided over by Justice Susan Okalony that on February 14, 2018, Jackline Nakku at their home in Nabuuti village Mukono municipality hit her husband Eric Ssenyonjo Kiddu several times on the head, with an iron bar, killing him instantly.
The prosecutor also told court that Ssenyonjo’s body was found in a pool of blood with an iron bar, a panga and a brick besides it.
Further, court heard that after killing her husband, Nakku rushed out of their house making an alarm to attract neighbours.
“She rushed to the neighbours and told them that her husband had been attacked by unknown people in their bedroom,” Ms Kiconco told court during Nakku’s trial.
However, witnesses told court that Nakku and Ssenyonjo had a misunderstanding that led to a quarrel and consequently the fatal fight.
Ssenyonjo had accused Nakku of having an affair with another man.
Justice Okolany on Friday said all the circumstantial evidence presented in court showed that she was involved in her husband’s murder.
According to Justice Okolany, Nakku intended to kill Ssenyonjo because she concentrated on his head which she hit several times.
The judge further observed that murder cases are rampant in Mukono District and therefore, the 20 she handed to Nakku were deterrent enough.
The judge however, advised Nakku to appeal against court’s decision if she was not satisfied.
Outside court, there was chaos as relatives from either side (Nakku and Ssenyonjo) traded accusations.
