What you need to know:

Emphasising efficiency, work quality and consistence in doing work is the best way through which you can ensure winning future sub-contracts from the bigger companies especially in the construction industry. Joseph Bahingwire writes.

Subcontracting is done when a company wins a contract but feels it does not have enough personnel to undertake the work .This makes it hire an individual or another registered company that can undertake specialised work on a particular project.
Mr Joshua Odongo, a construction manager in Kampala, says subcontracting is good both for the subcontractor and the main contractor because it allows for work to be done quickly and effectively since in most cases the subcontractor is a specialist in a given field.
He, however, says to be contracted as sub-contractor you must have been tested and proven as an efficient contractor.
“Employing subcontractors is the best way to avoid laziness at your project and in the long run achieve quick and better results because it avoids the situation of boredom and lack of competition from the permanent employees,” he says.
This makes the main contractor finish the work in time allowing quick pay from the client which, in turn, benefits the subcontractors who works to be paid once the work is complete.
According to Mr Dennis Wandera, the managing director Plan Build Technical Services Limited, under labour subcontracting agreement one is paid after completing the agreed amount of work and failure to deliver he or she is not paid. This is because workers are paid depending on the work done than time spent at the place of work.
“With labour subcontracting a person is paid depending on what he or she has done. It helps the contractor to get more money by working hard and also helps the client get value for the money paid,” he says.
Being a labour subcontractor comes with benefits and disadvantages.
These include greater responsibilities such as being responsible for taxes and legal issues unlike the employee whose responsibilities are taken by the employer.
Mr Wandera says the other benefit of being a labour subcontractor is that you become a boss of your own and do not have to report to any one which allows a great deal of freedom over when, where, and how you do your work.
“For self-motivated people, this is a benefit because these people do not depend heavily on a supervisor to get their work done,” he adds.
“The lack of oversight can create postponement habits in some people hence struggling with keeping up with their tasks and staying focused because of not having someone to report to,” he says.

What efficiency is

Efficiency signifies a level of performance that describes a process that uses the lowest amount of inputs to create the greatest amount of outputs. Efficiency relates to the use time, money and other inputs in producing any given output.
