The troubled royal marriage: Why you should be interested

Handling this story is a finely delicate balance. It is a private affair between two adults. But it is also a marital affair of public persons, whose lives and actions affect those who look up to them, some of whom are, at the very least, bound by culture to pay homage to them.

The troubled seas that have become the marriage between Princess Ruth Komuntale and the Duke, Christopher Thomas, who have now announced their separation, are like a tutorial, an academic case study through what marital journeys have become in this day.

Do not be fooled; the royal couple is not alone in this. What has happened to the couple is simply a continuation, another joint in the chain of many more, much less publicised marriages, which make the dramatic about-turn from the hyper-activity of limousines, confetti and celebration on the wedding day, to the doom and gloom of violent separation, within months.

Why is it so hard to make marriage last in this day? What is this generation not doing right to get it so wrong, so often in marriage? Do we rush into these decisions? Do we not treat the institution with the seriousness it deserves? Is it just another milestone in one’s life, you know, just like university education is another milestone?

Questions have to be asked about the prepping for marriage that this generation, and as a result, the generations after, get for this institution.

Marriage is so important, almost to a level that dwarfs everything else. It is in marriages that children and societies are (supposed to be) raised and bred. It is here that the political SI unit, the family, is found. Just what kind of societies are we setting ourselves up for if we have a fundamental breakdown of the very system supposed to build our societies?

Maybe times have changed! Yes, they have. So today, instead of rushing to an elder, upon catching your spouse cheating, there is Facebook and your blog too, as willing channels to help you vent and let the whole wide world know just what a mess your marriage has become. After that, the damage is almost irreparable.

That strategy, of course is not working. Many a way of handling relationships are not working for modern day couples. How can this be salvaged?

Healthy marriages create healthy families, which create healthy homes for the proper breeding and nurturing of healthy societies. And we are talking health in all manner of the word, even and especially mental and psychological health.
It may be a personal tragedy for two individuals. But it is characteristic of the society they live in. And you do not need to be a royal to know it is worrying.
