‘About Her,’ new movie showing at Cineplex

No doubt Uganda’s movie industry is slowly but surely growing despite a few challenges here and there. That’s why when the year starts with a Ugandan movie screening at Cineplex, you know the future can only be bright.

Given that we are still in the laid back New Year mood, this is not the everyday hard on socio-political issues movies. It gives the fresh year that soft note and light touch it deserves by mainly entertaining as you pick a life lesson or two along the way.

The one hour long movie, written by Mabel Nalunkuma and directed by Lowella Namirembe is not the type of movie that will get you shedding tears and cursing actors, who are as few as only 10.

A section of the audience may take issue with some actors and actresses coming off as amateurs, showing how they needed more time to grasp their game before going on stage. The movie would be better if the sound and music were not taken for granted. How a movie can have one song running through all scenes, albeit different settings and ideas will get some of the audience asking hard questions.

Contemporary issues like petty office politics and romance, the influence social networks have in our lives and coping with challenges in life are addressed but with a soft touch approach. It will be thrilling to see our home grown talent act these out from a strictly Kampala setting while remaining natural and good at their game. There’s actually everything to identify with in the movie, from the potholed roads, poorly planned buildings to the laid back Ugandan lifestyle.

The director’s choice of Rukh-Shana Namuyimba as lead actor gives the movie a touch of talent as she pulls her game off quite impressively. She acts as Mirembe, the typical urban, trendy and happy go -lucky-come girl. She does all she can to live her life to the fullest by manipulating people and remote controlling their lives, only to end unhappy.
