Add a playful touch to your living room using bean bags

What you need to know:

Living rooms are synonymous with the usual sofa sets or wooden chairs but one can transform a rather boring looking room into a sassy and contemporary look using bean bags, writes Mary Atuheire.

The commonest activity in living rooms is watching television so when furnishing it, ultimate attention has to be given to the occupants’ sitting comfort. The new developments in décor allow for a casual and comfortable sitting option to spruce up the traditional sofa sets look. They are incredibly comfortable and soft, providing a great place to relax and unwind.

Bean bags were popular in the 70s and are now making a big come back. They are made of fashionable material, with polyurethane shredded foam or memory foam - which observes to all safety standards.

Bean bags come in various attractive colours, designs and sizes to accommodate all age group. Some of their advantages include being portable, fun, versatile, practical, ‘child proof’ for those with children and can easily be washed.

There are typically four shapes of beanbags - the teardrop, armchair, cylinder and sack. The sack is the most popular beanbag – and is popular among both the young and old. Bean bags are made in various materials including cotton, suede, nylon and vinyl.

Vinyl is the most commonly used material in making bean bag chairs, although some people feel that vinyl is too sticky and not as comfortable as cloth bean bag chairs. Vinyl is easy to wipe up and keep clean which is a definite advantage.

Maintenance tips
•Do not place bean bags on rough surfaces (i.e. concrete, outdoor surfaces)

•Do not jump on bean bag chairs

•Avoid sitting in chair while wearing clothing or accessories with sharp metal edges (i.e. belt buckles, wristbands, jewelry)

•Keep away from animals with claws like cats and dogs that can puncture the fabric

How to clean a bean bag
Use warm water and a mild detergent on a cloth to remove general dirty areas of the bean bag chair. Liquid dish soap is an example of a mild detergent. Do not use harsh/abrasive cleaners because they may scratch the fabric. Bean bags can be got at Furniture Barrel in industrial area and at Biplous in Bukoto and range from Shs 170,000 and above.
