Captivating sights from the catwalk

Kampala Fashion Week 2016. For three days, designers, old and new, regaled us with their creative work on the catwalk. Even in this sea of creativity, there were creatives that stood out.

The third edition of Kampala Fashion Week held last weekend at The Square in Industrial area. This year’s week was a thre- day event, which kicked off with the finale of the Seed Show on day one.

The Seed show is a fashion talent competition organised by the US Mission in Uganda in collaboration with Kas Wear by Ras Kasozi.

The next two days was a talent galore with emerging brands such as Kkoolo, NFK Clothing and Turah, proving that they are just as creative and ready for worldwide take over as the more established designers.
Here are some of the highlights:

The necklines
So many designers used necklines as a focal point of their collections. Turah, another new brand had this exquisite spiky neck detail that featured on many of their pieces.

NFK did the same, their blazers and jackets had everything from off the shoulder to plunging necklines, all cast in a cohesive collection.

Hijabs and Muslim wear
Lukwanzi, another brand showcasing for the first time on the KFW runway proved that the hijabista movement is taking over when they showcased hijabs, thobes and long dresses all in calm shades of cream and gray.

It was a mixture of modesty and elegance all in one. The collection was in all its entirety wearable and the clothes draped comfortably on the models.

Unconventional designs
Fashion week is incomplete without extraordinary and unconventional designs. Design duo Bobbin and Seif had some of the most unconventional looks of the entire week.

They maintained one colour for the entire collection, which consisted mainly of tunics, pants and shirts all constructed abstractly. Isabella Isabeau, a brand that mixes architecture with fashion had an interesting collection.

Apart from the perfectly tailored men’s suits, some of the women’s pieces had unconventional cuts and drapes from double slits to a jumpsuit with trousers of different colours.

Accessories
Accessory brands were in high gear this year. With Love from Africa showcased bags that had this beautiful cowhide skin detail and Masai print. Kona showcased their new collection of African print bags and their jewellery that always stands out.

Youth culture
Kkoolo’s collection was a mixture of Samurai inspired outfits, longs coats and jumpsuits with dandelions, and lots of leather. It felt fun and youthful, but above all, very cohesive.

NFK Clothing took it all away
NFK Clothing opened day two with mainly black and blue pieces all finished with striking lace detail.

Models showcased striking jackets and structured dresses. The designer behind the brand, Olivia Nanfuka, says she was inspired by midnight waves for this collection, the intrigue and dark mystery was evident in every single piece.

What was most interesting is that Olivia Nanfuka was the winner of the Seed Fashion Show last year, and this was her first major showcase.

Gloria Wavamunno and Jose Hendo
As usual, Gloria Wavamunno crowned the night with her mixture of blues and creams with florals. Models had these beautiful chokers in floral print, a definite show stopper.

Jose Hendo closed the evening and the entire event, with her amazing pieces all made from recyclable material. Clothes had accessories that looked like seatbelts. Every single outfit had a wow factor, and to complete it all, she had Aamito close the show in an interesting neckpiece that went all the down like a train.

Now that’s the way to close fashion week!
Aamito and plus size models in the same pack
Aamito was one of the biggest highlights of the event. She opened day one with NFK and closed it with a beautiful bridal gown from Morine Designs.

She also opened day two in Catherine & Sons, opened for Gloria Wavamunno and went ahead to close the event wearing a show stopping creation by Jose Hendo. This year’s event saw an entry of plus size models on the runway who walked for Morine Designs, Lukwanzi and Kona. It’s always a breath of fresh air, considering that Ugandan women are mostly curvy.
