Fruits you can eat during pregnancy

During pregnancy, your baby-to-be depends on you to provide the nutrition they need. For this reason, it is important to eat a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Fruits and vegetables are nutrient-dense. Amanda Tumwebaze, a nutritionist says eating fruits and vegetables also helps prevent constipation, a common symptom during pregnancy. Fruits can help in satisfying your sweet cravings with a nutrition benefit.

Mangoes
Mangoes are another great source of vitamin C and A. Vitamin A deficiency at birth is associated with lower immunity and a higher risk of complications like diarrhoea and respiratory infections in neonates. Mangoes are a great addition to your pregnancy diet, but eat them in moderation along with a variety of other fruits.

Avocados
Tumwebaze says, “Avocados are a great source of vitamin C, B, K, fibre, choline, magnesium and potassium. Avocados also contain iron and have more folate than other fruits.

The choline and folate in the fruit are vital in foetal brain and nerve development and may help in preventing neurological defects in newborns.”

Leg cramps, a common pregnancy symptom are often caused by low potassium and magnesium and including avocado in your diet can help with a great supply of the mineral.

Citrus fruits
Drinking lemon water helps relieve pregnancy-related nausea. Since lemons are very high in vitamin C, they help stimulate the digestive system to relieve constipation. Note however, that lemons if taken often can erode tooth enamel, so rinse your mouth after eating them.

She says, “Oranges are also a great source of folate that helps prevent brain and spinal cord defects, also known as neural tube defects. Oranges are also rich in vitamin C an antioxidant that helps prevent cell damage. It also helps your body absorb iron.”

Bananas
Bananas are a good source of potassium, vitamin B-6, vitamin C, and fibre. Many women experience constipation during pregnancy caused by anxiety, uterine pressure on the intestines, and a low fiber diet. Eating bananas often help in bowel movements. Also, the vitamin B-6 may help relieve nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy. Berries and apples are also healthy options.
