I want to be remembered as one who was not afraid to take risks

What you need to know:

David Miti is a medical officer at Uganda Cancer Institute working at the paediatric ward. He had a chat with Joan Salmon.

Who was your childhood hero?

My mother. Even today, nothing comes close. She has been with me through all my struggles and has always given me the best advice.

What was the first book you read?

Think Big by Ben Carson. It introduced me to the phenomenon of thinking outside the box, something I have carried with me to date.

Given a chance, what other career choice would you opt for? Why?

I’m already in a different career. I was studying civil engineering before changing to medicine. Nonetheless, if I was to do another swap, I would go for law.

What crazy things have you done for love?

They are several but the one that stands out was standing outside my girlfriend’s apartment when it was -20 degrees outsid.

She had refused to pick my calls after an argument. I knew it was dangerous but I wanted us to make up.

After a few hours, I was in the emergency room with hypothermia.

What is the best advice you ever got from a woman?

My mother told me, get a good woman, make her your life manager, you will succeed in life.

What is that one thing that people do not know about you?

As much as I work all week, I find time to go for adventure and nature walks.

What qualities do you look out for in a woman?

Hardworking, intelligent and God-fearing. Women play a very big role in building families and happy relationships.

Therefore, with these qualities, chances of a happy life and family are high. Like the saying goes, behind every successful man, there is a woman.

When you are not attending to patients, what else do you do?

If I am not at work, I am at home with family or going out to hang out with friends

Who is that one person you want to meet before you die?

It was Nelson Mandela but he passed on. At the moment, I would want to meet Queen Elizabeth because she has been the leader of United Kingdom for many years.

I have been there and the love people have for her is overwhelming.  It is like how the Baganda revere their King- Ronald Mwenda Mutebi.

Are there books you would recommend a friend to read?

The Alchemist for the philosophy and intrigue of the book.

If you had to change anything about the medical industry in Uganda, what would it be?

Better pay.  Medical practitioners put their lives at the frontline to save the lives of others. This is something every leader must appreciate.

Health practioners across Uganda continue to work under poor conditions and their welfare is often forgotten. All these need to change so that the allowances are commensurate with the efforts and time they dedicate to patients.

I would also like to see adequate equipment in hospitals because if one is to work on a patient with a contagious disease and there is no protective gear, they are putting their lives at risk.

What kind of legacy do you want to leave?

I want to be remembered as one that was not afraid to take on life’s challenges as they came. I subscribe to the view that hardwork beats talent. No one will appreciate your talent if you do not get to work.

In your view, what is the glue that holds a relationship together?

Proper communication keeps spouses on the same page and eliminates suspicion. Imagine going somewhere without telling your wife or girlfriend. Why would you subject your loved one to that kind of anxiety?

Besides that, communication helps to resolve standoffs. Whenever a couple has an argument, talk about it, explain or apologise.

All this is communication.  Lack of it will break a relationship, no matter how strong it is. Respect is also key because the moment you respect someone, there are things you will not do to them.

What one meal you would prepare with ease?

Spaghetti. It takes a few minutes to prepare and the rules are few.

Any advice to the  youth?

Work hard. Nothing is impossible.
