Egyptian doctors offer free surgery to patients

A team of Egyptian medical doctors has started a one week surgical operation and training of local doctors at Kibuli Hospital. Over 90 hernia and goiter patients are expected to receive free medical service codenamed laparoscopic surgical camp.

“We shall be treating over 60 patients from Kibuli and 30 from Mulago to help us reduce the number of hernia and goiter patients in Uganda.” said Youssef Mohamed.

He said this at the launch of surgical camp and training organized by the Association of Surgeons of Uganda, Kibuli Muslim Hospital, Mulago Hospital and Egyptian Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons at the hospital yesterday.
Over 200 patients turned up for the operation but only 90 could be treated due to limited recourses. Each operations costs about US$1500.

Team leader Prof. Mohamed Youssef said they are in Uganda to give a hand to follow African brothers.

“Egypt has over 200,000 doctors who are now trying to extend their services to their brothers and sisters in Africa who need help. We have done such similar service in Sudan, Kishasha, Somalia Uganda and other countries”, he said.
“We look forward to even train young surgeons in modern surgeon skills.

Goiter is caused by lack of iodine the body. Youssef advises consumption of sea foods or salt with iodine.
