What should I use to prevent sweaty armpits since I ditched powder?
Doctor, I use powder on some of areas of my body that sweat a lot. Recently, my sister advised me against this, without reason. I am a relatively big lady who sweats a lot, which I cannot allow to keep happening, especially in public. What can I do? Hilda Kanyemukyala
Dear Hilda
Depending on the type of body powder used, powders containing Talcum which is very efficient in drying sweaty areas of the body (face, armpits, groin and others) hence preventing body odours, is usually contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen.
‘Talc’ is often mined in close proximity with asbestos, which may risk the user ovarian and endometrial cancer (when used on the groin) and lung cancer once inhaled say during application on other areas.
Being sweaty and therefore risking body odours is common on a hot day or when one is physically active and overweight. Light wear then may come in handy but if you may need use of a powder, there are many powders that, do not contain talc you can get from a cosmetic shop. If you are scared of powders still you can apply antiperspirants as advised by your doctor.
