Getting rid of rubbish in a home

What you need to know:

According to Sapphira Nyabunwa, the managing director of Safi Cleaning Services, one’s home should be neat at all times. In order to achieve that, there is need to put all the waste and rubbish in their place. Rubbish can be put in a pit bin, trash bin or one can hire waste collectors.

There is nothing as unappealing as scattered rubbish in or around a house. A clean home enables one to feel the spacious environment without worrying about abrupt visitors.

According to Sapphira Nyabunwa, the managing director of Safi Cleaning Services, one’s home should be neat at all times. In order to achieve that, there is need to put all the waste and rubbish in their place. Rubbish can be put in a pit bin, trash bin or one can hire waste collectors.

Managing your wastes and other rubbish-related particles is important because it minimises the spread of infections and reduces the risk of accidental injury in a home.

It also helps to provide an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere and reduces bad odour. Most wastes like banana peels and food left-overs attract insects and animals; this makes a home messy so, it would be better if one avoids such scenarios by simply collecting all the rubbish.

Mr Aggrey Otori, the chief operations officer at Bin-it Services, says keeping the environment clean is everybody’s responsibility in a home.
“We advise our clients to at least have a small pit so that they can put the decomposing waste for manure like food stuffs and banana peels, among others,” he says. He adds that those who cannot afford cleaning services can at least collect and sort the garbage in a way that is easily managed. Burning of waste containing different items is not advised in a home since the smoke can be harmful to one’s home and surroundings.

According to Ms Nyabunwa, one should have a place to put their garbage or hire a garbage collector in case they can afford to or have no time to do it themselves. “Get different waste collection points for easy sorting. For instance, plastics and polythene bags should be separated from papers and food stuffs,” she says. She adds that one should also avoid piling all the garbage at one collection point so that they keep the environment clean.

Ms Shakira Nabatanzi a.k.a Maama Tendo, a house wife says she likes a clean home and hates it when she enters the house that is full of rubbish. “I manage my wastes without spending a coin. I collect buveras and plastic bottles in the dustbin. I burn them thereafter and pour the rest in my banana garden,” she says. She adds that she doesn’t allow littering in her premises and that all her tenants know that.

At Bin-it Services Ltd, they provide clients with three complementary bin liners or large plastic bags. “During each refuse collection visit, we collect up to three bags of refuse from outside your gate and replace them with fresh bin liners,” Otori says. He adds that in case one generates more than three bags of garbage, they can discuss and agree on a suitable arrangement.

There are three options that one can choose, depending on the amount of refuse they have. These include; bronze refuse, which is collected once in a week and silver refuse twice a week, but paid monthly. Gold refuse is collected thrice a week.

At Bin-it Services Ltd, the cleaning services range from Shs20,000 to Shs100,000 per month, but the exact amount depends on how often one wants their refuse to be collected. The gold refuse is charged Shs42,480 thrice a week, silver-Shs32,285 twice a week and bronze refuse goes for Shs22,102 once a week, but paid monthly.

At Safi Cleaning Services, the cost depends on how much garbage is generated but for a single home, it’s normally Shs20,000 per collect. Filling a track with garbage costs Shs100,000 per week.

The Kampala City Council (KCC) garbage track collects garbage in the suburbs of Kampala and prices range from Shs300- Shs1,000 per collect. Boys who collect garbage from door to door normally charge between Shs500 to Shs1,000.
