Kira: An emerging high end residential area

While there is still more vacant land in Kira, it is not as much of a bush as it were before because there are a number of developments and businesses coming up in the area. Photo by Abubaker Lubowa

What you need to know:

When mentioning some of the posh areas in Wakiso District, one of them will be Kira; an area that was initially a forest but has now turned into a hub for refined houses.

A few years ago, Kira was a forest and people were not used to the area then, while land in areas such as Namugongo and Naalya was on demand because of their proximity to town.

However, when these two areas started becoming congested and the price of land was hiked because of the new developments, those looking at buying land in this part of town decided to settle in Kira.

Kira is approximately 14 kilometres (8.7 miles) from the city centre. It can be accessed from Ntinda or Kireka and it is one of the few towns that has nearly all roads tarmacked. However, the roads are always jammed with traffic from Naalya trading centre all through to Kyaliwajjala going beyond Martyrs shrine and Kira town.

Houses and property
Because of the accessibility of the place, Kira is largely a residential area with most houses self-contained with at least two or three bedrooms.

Rent in Kira is between Shs400,000 to Shs2m while apartments start from Shs450,000 all the way up to Shs1.3m. Land costs between Shs20m to Shs50m for a 50ft by 100ft and 100ft by 100ft plot and it’s owned by both private people and real estate agencies .
But according to Eddie Luyombya, a land agent, land prices in the area have soared. An acre of land can go for Shs300m, the same land that used to go for Shs150m a few years ago.

Commercial bit about Kira
The different businesses in the area include shopping Centres, primary and secondary schools as well as hangout spots.

Security
According to a resident in Kira, most parts of the area are not secure because of few police posts.
“Because of lots of construction sites in Kira, there is a lot of human traffic to sites and a lot of theft from household items to cars, he says.

There are few tiny police booths but the officers there are always asleep and Kira police station is far from the residential areas and can’t handle all the area due to the rapid growth of the area,” he says.

Check list
Before you rent

Just like any other developing town, Kira is still insecure. Therefore before you set out to either buy land or get a house for renting in the area, first ask about the security.
