Liven up your bathroom
What you need to know:
- A well decorated bathroom can provide a relaxing environment for you and your family.
When it comes to your bathroom, there are various lofty decorative ideas that you may incorporate in your bathroom spaces. Bathrooms should not always appear dull and cave-like. Bathroom décor adds a sense of elegance and freshness. For the lovers of interior décor, Yvette Teta Nunu, a sales person at Nina interiors gives hints on how to decorate your bathroom.
Rags/mats
Nunu says that for showers and bathroom cabinets, one should opt for water proof mats to protect one from sliding off the slippery wet floors. Bathroom rags need to be colourfully designed especially in a toddler’s bathroom as they provide a playful mood for them. According to Nunu, bathroom mats should be dry and placed at the door. The showers require water proof mats to hold the slippery floors.
Curtains
“Go for water proof curtains since a bath place is normally a wet environment, and avoid very long curtains in case you have large bathroom windows to prevent them from touching the wet floors especially for cotton cloth curtains,” says Nunu. In place of a bathroom cabinet, one may go for a water proof curtain to confine water within, away from wetting the whole room where as for large bathroom spaces, one may opt for large colourful curtains that brighten up the room and add a sense of style to your bathroom.
Potted plants
An injection of foliage is the perfect way to breathe life into a functional and sterile bathroom – and with its low light and high humidity, the bathroom makes the perfect home for many houseplants. But while those very conditions might be a tropical paradise for some, other plants could barely last the duration of a shower without wilting and withering – so choosing the right plant to suit the environment is essential.
Fresh plants or flowers can be placed next to the bathroom mirrors and should not be too large to cover the mirror. These enhance freshness and make the room appear lively and vibrant. “Avoid large potted plants for the bathroom for they make the space look too busy, and place them next to the door but ensure they are not in the way,” explains Nunu.
The best bathroom plants
Here are our top options for a botanical bathroom:
Orchid: Want to give your bathroom that luxury spa feel? Look no further than the orchid. Not only will it look serenely beautiful beside your sink or on your window ledge, the orchid thrives in warm and humid conditions.
Mother-in-law’s tongue: The Mother-in-law’s tongue, also known as the snake plant, is a great choice for the bathroom. Loving steamy, humid conditions, and able to thrive in low light, it is also a great air purifier, known for filtering out formaldehyde, commonly found in bathroom products. Plus, its long, vertical leaves mean it won’t be vying for space on your bathroom shelf.
Peace lily: With its rich green, glossy leaves and beautiful white flowers, the peace lily would make an attractive addition to any bathroom. Thriving in low light conditions, the peace lily won’t thank you for being over-watered so the natural humidity of the bathroom will help to keep it moist without the need to water it too often.
Fern: You can see from our photos that ferns are a happy inhabitant of any bathroom. With their wonderful leaves which make you smile, their ability to purify the air and being able to create a healthy air humidity ferns are the perfect companion for a relaxing soak in the tub.
Ivy: One of the easiest houseplants to keep, Ivy enjoys warm and humid conditions making it perfect for greening up the bathroom. For a display with added drama the aerial roots of the ivy can easily be trained to climb a moss stick or trellis. Make sure your ivy has a good light source to keep it’s lovely leaves photosynthesising.
Chandeliers
According to Nunu, bathroom lights should not be too long but should appear very attractive and small in size. You may need to opt for the ceiling bulbs that are simple but nice to go with for your bathroom spaces.
Scented candles and petals
“Scented petals give the bathroom a fresh smell. Scented candles can be placed on beautiful stands near the bath tab to give the room a cozy and lively atmosphere.” You may need this especially on a day when you are exhausted and need to relax.
