Br Fr Anatoli Wasswa, the founder

I was born in Singo, in a village called Kigo on February 15, 1927. In 1940, I studied catechism classes, and started Primary One the next year. In 1947, I left to go to Kiteredde in Masaka to become a seminarian. In 1948, I became a Brother. In 1950, I went to Busubizi TTC in Mityana, to study teaching. Those days, even somebody who finished Primary six could even work at the county as a clerk. Teachers taught so much, you studied nearly everything.

I became an accountant for our group, the Congregation of Bannakaloli Brothers, for 12 years. In 1970, I went to Katigondo to study priesthood, and after that I became Brother Father. I stayed working in Masaka Diocese and most of the work I was doing was as chaplain of the Congregation of Bannakaloli Brothers.

Members wanted to put our culture on the map, so that our ways, language and traditions do not get lost. There was also the issue of promoting herbal medicine. Most people had a challenge; they could not access western medicine, and, when they went for herbal medicine, the educated would call it satanic because of the practices that were tied to it. I met people who knew these medicines, and together, we started treating people with herbal medicine.

I have been explaining these practices that they (witchdoctors) used to tie to the medicines.
Our culture had so many practices attached to it, which people believed in, and some of which derail them from God, say the case of evil spirits. They would also for instance, say that a hill or a forest has an evil spirit, so that no one ever goes there. In truth, there was no evil spirit but the moral was to conserve the forest and not cut trees.

It is here that crooks have come up and started conning other people. Everybody who picks herbs, calls themselves a doctor. Those who build shrines, call themselves doctors. They will tell lies that horns can speak. They have now made horns that speak and dance, and yet, those horns are powered by electricity. The end result has been human sacrifice.
