Five ways to rock your beard

Consecutively trimming helps maintain that solid look that keeps the hairs kempt.

What you need to know:

FACIAL HAIR. A clean shaven face is most men’s preference, but we have those who pride in their signature look— a beard. Douglas D. Sebamala brings you tips on how to wear it without tearing apart your fashion sense.

For some men, beards are unbearable, but there are those who enjoy rocking facial hair. In fact, Fred Mugenyi, chief barber at J&J Salon at Haruna Mall in Ntinda, says “most men hate beards. They always get rid of them when they grow because they cause an itchy skin irritation”.
Even though little thought is often given to beards, a wrong beard is a fashion no-no. You do not want to walk around looking like a Stone Age creature. So how can you rock the look and still come off neatly-groomed?

Style it for shape
The first step is always letting the hairs grow. We know how long it takes (weeks or even months; it’s a matter of genetics). So, take few months before shaping it for style. There are several shapes such as the traditional with thick sideburns, full circle around lip and chin, the goatee and Vandyke (keeps moustache and lower lip hairs). Find styling that matches your face and play about with dynamic changes.

Product vs skin
Mind your skin while you trim or entirely shave particular margins. Ensure to use either shaving cream or apply bump patrol. “Bumps are thick swollen pores (pimple- like after shaving). Bump patrol will help keep clear skin and works well on sensitive skin,” Mugenyi explains.
Whatever product you rub into your beard gets to your skin, so go for products that won’t clog your pores for irritation. Raymond Tari at De Age Salon says, “Bumps come when you press the machine and it scratches the face, the skin becomes sensitive and reacts.” He decampaigns use of spirit, resounding Mugenyi’s caution for barber care that clean non-sweaty palms, disinfected before touching the beard will prevent infections.
Even though majority use bar soap to wash facial hairs, shampooing, conditioning and moisturising your beard a few times each week gives it a lustrous look. Keep it conditioned for longer and do not rinse.

Eat healthy
No special food will improve beard growth but a balanced diet is healthy for hair and skin. Keep your lunch out of your beard too, wipe off food crumps.

Use a machine
Use the right tools when trimming. Electric trimmers with fine edges are safer. If they are bulky, then scissors will moderate how much you trim so you don’t lose the thickness. “Using shavers and razor blades require immediate aftershave or bump patrol,” Rose Ndagire at Beauty Centre, Ntinda, recommends a warm towel wipe over the beards for pores open up.

Trim often

Consecutively trimming helps maintain that solid look that keeps the hairs kempt. Minimal proportions of facial hairs remove the shabby off your face. If you grow the full dose beard; like Rick Ross, the American hip-hop artiste, then trimming its edges at equal level shall keep it smart.
Mugenyi recommends a weekly trimming for the beard to keep neat and kempt. Even if it is so long, getting rid of split ends every few weeks or so is important.
