Injury inspired Umony’s Naguru Give-Back Drive

What you need to know:

  • Soccer. A galaxy of corporate sponsors have come on to support striker Brian Umony’s initiative.

KAMPALA. The idea was first mooted in January 2015 when Brian Umony completed a move from KCCA to Ethiopia’s St George.
But that idea of giving back to Naguru, a community that bred the footballer, was not to take off until the following year.
However, at about the same time it was supposed to happen Umony broke his leg in a collision with an opposing goalkeeper in an Ethiopian Premier League match; an injury he has nursed for two years until returning to fitness just recently.
“This is the best time to do it,” Umony, who has been at his new Indian club Gokulam Kerala playing a series of friendly matches, told SCORE about today’s Naguru-Give-Back charity match at StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo. The main match is between Umony X1 and Naguru Echo.
A cast of former and current Uganda Cranes stars including Tonny Mawejje and David Obua among others have confirmed their availability for the match.
“I’m a bit relieved by my injury situation now. Now is the right time I go back to work and launch this other side of my passion (giving back).
“The injury of course spurred me on. We had planned this before I got injured, but the injury also acts as an inspiration to thank God for pulling me out of such a tight situation. I thought I should do something that blesses other people’s lives.”
Former Cranes skippers Geofrey Massa and Andy Mwesigwa, Dennis Iguma, Denis Okot, Sadam Juma and Owen Kasule among others have also confirmed their availability for the match.
