Educationists, parents and teachers should move away from emphasising memorisation of events and scenarios and instead, lay emphasis on the understanding of the facts behind those events, Ian Williams, an education expert and School Director at Kampala International School Uganda, has advised.
Williams, who was speaking during the second graduation ceremony at the School’s campus in Bukoto, said, this form of teaching, prepares students to face real situations in the real world. “Independent thinking is a skill that is needed in today’s world, where innovation and alternative approach to solving world problems is much sought-after both in life and at the workplace,” he said.
A total of ten students, received their International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma completion certificates from KISU in a ceremony, presided over by the British High Commissioner to Uganda, His Excellency Martin Shearman, assisted by Ian Williams, Kampala International School Uganda, School Director.
The IB Diploma Programme which is an alternative to pre- university programmes like A-level is an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, normally aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. KISU is one of the few International Schools in Uganda that offers the programme that is recognized in all leading universities worldwide.
The school, which is part of the Ruparelia Group, was accredited to offer the IB Diploma by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) in 2008.
Williams said that with the IB Diploma being offered locally, more Ugandan parents and students, would find it easier to join renowned European and American Universities. “The IB Diploma is an opportunity for students studying in Uganda to access the same quality of education being enjoyed by their peers all over the world; allowing them equal access and opportunities in the global job market,” he said, adding: “Through the diploma, our students acquire the skills, knowledge and intercultural understanding that prepares them to play significant roles in the development of their communities and the world over,” he said.
