Eleven people were on Saturday admitted to Dr Ambrosoli Memorial Hospital Kalongo Hospital in Agago District after eating suspected poisoned goat meat.

The victims are all members of the same family from Arum Central Village, Lamiyo Sub-county in Agago District.
The goat had died a day before the family members ate the carcass.

The Lamiyo Sub-County chairperson, Mr Tony Ocaya, said the goat had died mysteriously.

“After the meal, they all started vomiting and complaining of stomach ache before they were rushed to hospital for further management,” Mr Ocaya said.
He said of the 11 people admitted to the hospital, six were children and the rest adults.

Mr Ocaya also said samples of the meat had been taken to the Government Analytical Laboratory in Kampala for further analysis.

Mr Alex Obur, the family head of the affected household, who survived the incident because he had travelled away to a market, said his goat disappeared on Thursday, and it was found dead on Saturday.

“My children went to graze goats and some disappeared and when they went to graze again the following day, they found one dead and brought the carcass home and skinned it and it was prepared for dinner,” he said.

“They ate the entrails and by 8.00pm, the children started vomiting and complaining of abdominal pain,” he said.

The affected were first taken to Arum Health Center III, but their condition worsened and were rushed to Dr Ambrosoli Hospital Kalongo.

The Agago District councillor for Lamiyo Sub-county, who doubles as Secretary for Health Agago District, Mr Cosmas James Okidi, said they are still waiting for official reports from the hospital on what could have exactly happened to the 11 family members.

He urged the residents to desist from eating carcasses of animals that have died mysteriously.
