The recall for the cars arises from the need for over 450 pick-up trucks to supervise the forthcoming elections. PHOTO/FILE.

What you need to know:

  • Uganda heads to polls Thursday next week to elect a President and Members of Parliament.
  • On January 20, there will be the election of district local government council/chairperson, lord mayors, mayors and councillors.

The head of Public Service and Secretary to Cabinet, Mr John Mitala, has written to permanent secretaries and accounting officers of all government ministries to hand over vehicles that will be used to facilitate movement in next week’s General Election.

Mr Mitala in his December 21, 2020 letter,  said the national organising committee for the forthcoming polls is in need of 450 pick-up trucks for supervision.

“As you are all aware, Uganda under the stewardship of the Electoral Commission (EC), is going through major electoral activities for the January 2021 General Election. The national organising committee for the January 2021 elections, requires about 450 pick-up supervision vehicles to cover the entire country,”  the letter reads in part.

“Given the scale of the requirement, district local governments will also be required to contribute towards the vehicle needs. Consequently, the transport sub-committee of the national organising committee, has been tasked to mobilise 450 pick-up vehicles from the central government, ministries, departments and agencies.

“I am therefore, writing to request you to release the identified vehicles to the chief mechanical engineer, ministry of Works for inspection and subsequent redeployment,” Mr Mitala adds.

The head of Public Service has also cautioned the permanent secretaries to cooperate, adding that when an identified vehicle is unavailable, a suitable alternative should be found.

Mr Mitala said the EC will be responsible for fuelling, carrying out repairs and maintenance for the vehicles and also provide allowances for the drivers. He added that the inspection exercise to select the most suitable vehicles should have started on December 22, 2020 at Kololo ceremonial grounds.
