Abubaker Kawalya beats FDC's Nyanjura to become KCCA Speaker

Independent candidate Abubaker Kawalya has been elected Speaker of Kampala Capital City Authority Council.

He won the election with 17 votes, beating Doreen Nyanjura who got 14 votes and Muhammed Segirinya with only one vote.

The election took place at the KCCA Chambers today.

The speaker presides over council meetings, a role initially played by the Lord Mayor under the old law.

Mr Buruhani Byaruhanga, (Kyambogo University) has been declared the deputy speaker after getting 18 votes while his contender Doreen Sabuka garnered 13. One of the votes cast was invalid.
