KAMPALA. The Internal Affairs ministry on Monday lauded Aronda Nyakairima for his role in ensuring that the national identity card project got underway.

Though the idea was conceived in 2005, it was actualised after 2014 after Gen. Nyakairima, the former chief of defence forces, was appointed Internal Affairs minister.

Gen. Nyakairima died one year ago while returning to Uganda from South Korea via the United Arab Emirates.

According to the government, he died due to cardiac arrest.

“We started on the national identity card project before Aronda joined us. And for sure, we would not have delivered had it not been for Gen. Aronda,” Internal Affairs ministry permanent secretary Stephen Kagoda said.

“When Gen. Aronda came in, he instituted a multi–sectorial approach because a national identity card is a national identity card and, therefore, all stakeholders had to play a role.”

Mr Kagoda was today speaking at Makerere University during a memorial lecturer for the late Nyakairima.
