Buganda mourns former minister, MP Bagunywa

A former minister in Buganda Kingdom who was also once a Member of Parliament for Mityana South, Arthur Bagunywa has died aged 91.
Bagunywa died on Thursday according to Mengo information minister, Noah Kiyimba.
"The kingdom announced the death of Mr Bagunywa. We will miss him," Mr Kiyimba said in an audio message sent to reporters.
The kingdom has set up a committee that will be chaired by minister for special duties Daudi Mpanga with members including Marian Mayanja, Noah Kiyimba and Elijiah Kyobe to oversee the burial arrangements in coordination with the family.

Mr Kiyimba said Bagunywa’s body will arrive at his home in Bunga on Sunday where a funeral service will be held and an overnight vigil before a funeral mass at Namirembe cathedral on Monday at 9am.
Bagunywa will be buried at his birth place where he also attended Primary School at Ssinde-Kiboga Ssingo.
The late Bagunywa, according to CBS radio journalist, Mr Wamala Balunabba who hails from the same area and has been close to the deceased, studied at Bukomero, Mityana Junior before joing Mityana Secondary School Namukozi where he left to join Bishop Tucker College Uganda.

He also attended Government Teachers College Kampala, University of London UK and Columbia University US.
He’s a renowned writer having authored a number of books including Primary Education in Uganda, The Teaching of African Languages in East Africa, and Teaching Materials in Teacher Education, A Traveller's Tales, Enkuluze Y'Oluganda Olw'ennono (co-author), Enkuluze Y'Oluganda n'Olungereza Olufunze, Languages of Education in Uganda and Common Sense in Education for East Africans.

He had a Masters of Arts in Spoken Languages and academic proficiency in Music.
"He once worked as a Primary School teacher, a tutor at Teachers Colleges, and because of a classic career, he often represented Uganda in international education conferences abroad," Mr Bbalunaba told Daily Monitor.
He was once an executive board member of UNESCO in 1974 and became Member of Parliament for Mityana South in 1996.

In 2005, Kabaka Mutebi appointed him Minister of Tourism, Heritage and Cooperatives in Buganda government.
