Bugiri election: Chaos as residents beat up MP over bribing voters

There was a scuffle in Bugiri Municipality after Bukooli Central Member of Parliament (MP) Solomon Silwanyi was reportedly discovered giving out money to voters at Butambula central polling station.

There was a scuffle in Bugiri Municipality after Bukooli Central Member of Parliament (MP) Solomon Silwanyi was reportedly discovered giving out money to voters at Butambula central polling station.

Upon realizing that some voters were being bribed, others descended on the MP and started beating him. He also was seen punching and kicking back at some point.

In the process, Mr Silwanyi, took out pepper spray which he used to prevent journalists from taking pictures of him.
Alex Esagala a Daily Monitor photo-journalist and Ronald Galiwango, a reporter with NTV were injured in the scuffle.

Police managed to control the situation after they rescued Mr Silwanyi from the angry mob and drove him away in a pick-up truck.
Silwanyi is a member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
