Decomposing body found floating on River Namatala

BUDAKA-A decomposing body of unidentified man was discovered floating on River Namatala on Wednesday morning.

Namatala is a major river in Budaka District which forms a natural boundary between Budaka and Mbale districts.

Police authorities and area leaders suspect that the unidentified man in his 40s was swept by the current torrential rains that have continuously pounded most parts of the mountainous district.
Rice farmers who talked to Daily Monitor on Wednesday said that the body was discovered at the border point of Budaka and Mbale, approximately 5km from Mbale.

The body was discovered with clothing (a black trouser and a white T-Shirt) but without any identification.

The Deputy O/C CID, Mr Moses Bavekuno, said preliminary investigations reveal no suspicious leads.
“There were no signs of foul play-machete cuts or any other visible body injury on the body of the man,” Mr Bavekuno said.

Police authorities are investigating the incident with a view of establishing whether the deceased just slipped off and fell into the water by accident or unidentified people killed him and his body dumped into the river.

In 2012, three empty coffins were found floating on Nabuyonga stream, suspecting that the high powered rain could have washed them down stream. Several dead bodies have occasionally been retrieved from River Namatala after being washed down to Bugwere side.

Last year, about three unclaimed dead bodies were also buried at Budaka cemetery on the directive of the police.
