Entebbe residents have called upon the municipal authorities to collect garbage which has accumulated on the streets.

The residents said they are at risk of disease outbreaks.

The accumulated garbage has blocked parts of Kitooro and Gabunga roads in Division B in Entebbe Municipality.
Residents said the garbage is blocking access to their homes, shops and markets.

“Authorities have failed to collect garbage since the beginning of the week. This has made garbage heap pile up and block part of some roads,” Mr Kenneth Ssekide, a resident of Kitooro, told Daily Monitor at the weekend.

No garbage trucks
A municipal official, who declined to be named because he is not authorised to speak on the matter, said the three garbage disposal trucks have broken down.

The Entebbe Division B Chairman, Eng. Anthony Ssegujja, said the problem would soon be resolved. “The vehicles are too old and break down everyday but we hope to buy new ones this financial year,” he said.

The management of solid waste is one of the challenges facing many urban areas across the country.

Where there is an aggregation of human settlements with the potential to produce a large amount of solid waste; the collection, transfer and disposal of the waste has been generally assumed by municipal authorities that, however, most times have inadequate funds to offer effective services.
