Police in Kampala have arrested five traders for protesting garbage collection fees imposed on them by the capital city authority.

The traders under their umbrella body Kampala Arcade Traders Association were matching to City Hall to petition Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago to stop the private companies that are collecting money from them.

Their leader Godfrey Katongole says the traders are paying property taxes and money for trading licenses, hence KCCA should deduct some money from the above to pay their Garbage collection fees.

Unfortunately, they could not walk up to City Hall, as they were intercepted by police at Gazaland arcade in downtown Kampala.

Police arrested five of the protestors including their chairperson Katongole.

They have been taken to central police station.

Meanwhile, KCCA last month renewed contracts of three companies for one year to collect garbage in the city.

KCCA spokesperson person Peter Kaujju said that those three companies are meant to collect garbage at a fee between 3,000 to 30,000 shillings.

KCCA collects taxes for free only in slum areas where residents can hardly raise pay money.
