Gen Katumba shooting: What we know, what we don’t
The outgoing Minister of Works and Transport, Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, survived an assassination attempt yesterday that left his 32-year-old daughter and driver dead.
The incident happened at around 8:58am on Kisota Road in Kulambiro, Nakawa Division as Gen Katumba was being driven from his home to Entebbe Road where he had an engagement.
Five assailants trailed Gen Katumba’s official vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser Registration number H4DF 2138 from his home at Bulabira in Najeera to Kisota Road in Kulambiro where they intercepted them.
The assailants on three motorcycles had concealed number plates and were wearing masks.
They shot at the vehicle from the right hand side of the vehicle.
Brenda Nantongo, a daughter of Gen Wamala, his driver Haruna Kayondo, were shot and killed in their car seats.
Bullets also hit Gen Katumba on the left and right arms. The bodyguard, Sgt Khalid Koboyoit, fired back at the suspects before they fled the scene.
One of the criminals was reportedly shot in the leg but managed to take off.
The suspects haven’t yet been identified. However, they were seen on CCTV cameras trailing Gen Katumba’s vehicle.
The President said security already have clues to the killers but didn’t disclose the details.

The identities of the shooters are not yet established.
We don’t know the motive of the shooters.
We don’t know whether this shooting is linked to previous shootings of high profile people or not.
We don’t know the clues the security team have to the killers but the president promised that the new digital system will eliminate the misuse of vehicles and motorcycles to commit crimes.
