I’m alive, says Aggrey Awori

Former ICT minister Aggrey Awori says he has been off the public scene because he’s currently busy with his private ventures.

Speaking to journalists about rumours of his death on Tuesday, the 80-year-old former presidential contender said he has not been sick or admitted to any hospital recently. He was at his home in Kibimba village, Buluguyi Sub County in Bugiri District.

On Monday evening, some online reports claimed that Awori who was minister between February 2009 and May 2011 had died at Case Hospital in Kampala.

The hospital management, however, dismissed the reports as false saying the economist and politician who once served as Samia-Bugwe North MP from 2001 to 2006 had not been admitted there.

“I’m alive and well. Those are mere rumours. Everything is alright and the family is okay. When people don’t see me, they start assuming I’m dead. If I’m not in Kibimba, find me in Kampala where I do circulation business from,” Awori said and added “I appreciate all friends and family who came out and expressed concern over my health. I also thank Case Clinic for coming out to shed more light on this issue.”

Awori who was active in politics crossed from Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) in 2007 to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) before President Museveni appointed him minister.

He was Minister for Information and Communications Technology from February 16, 2009 to May 27, 2011.

He retired from active politics after being trounced by the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)’s Kevina Taaka in the race to represent Samia Bugwe North.
